In the Bible, there are many examples of people seeking to get the attention of heaven through prayer, fasting, and other spiritual practices. One of the most notable examples is the story of Cornelius, a Roman centurion who was seeking God's favor. He prayed and gave generously to the poor, and God responded by sending an angel to him with a message of salvation (Acts 10:1-8). The other equally notable story is the story of the Ethiopian Eunuch, who tried to read the scripture but lacked understanding and God responded immediately by sending Philip.
Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is a desert place. And he rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” (Acts 8: 26-30)
Unto the way which goes down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert: This passage refers to the account of Philip's encounter with the Ethiopian eunuch on his journey from Jerusalem to Gaza. The reference to the desert highlights the remoteness and desolation of the area, and the fact that it was a challenging and dangerous journey. When one gets the attention of heaven, it will not matter who gets inconvinienced as we see in the above portion. Even when the Eunuch couldnt understand what he was reading, what matters is that he had given attention to the word.
In a similar way, a man named Cornelius who was not a Jew got a visittion from an angel of the Lord because he believed and prayed. The fact that the angel of the Lord appears to Cornelius while he is praying suggests that his prayer was heard and answered by God, and that the angel was sent to him in response to his prayer. After this encounter, we see Peter, having to eat unclean things because the Lord was mindful of Cornelius and wanted Peter to teach him more.
And Cornelius said, “Four days ago, about this hour, I was praying in my house at the ninth hour,[d] and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing and said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God. Send therefore to Joppa and ask for Simon who is called Peter. He is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea.’ So I sent for you at once, and you have been kind enough to come. Now therefore we are all here in the presence of God to hear all that you have been commanded by the Lord.” (Acts 10: 30 - 33)
How do we get the attention of heaven?
Overall, these two accounts demonstrate that God's grace and mercy are available to all people, regardless of their background or circumstances, and that giving attention to the things of God like the word and seeking to understand it and being a doer of it will get us the ttention of heaven. As we see in the book of proverbs that the word of God is life to those who keep it. Similary, as Cornelius and Philip gave themselves to understand the word and in prayer, they got the attention of heaven.
My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings.Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh. (Prov 4:20-22)
We therefore understand that when we give attention to the word of God, and to his affairs, heaven also will give us attention.
Be blessed.
