Remember, there is only one foundation, the one already laid: Jesus Christ. Take particular care in picking out your building materials. Eventually there is going to be an inspection. If you use cheap or inferior materials, you'll be found out. The inspection will be thorough and rigorous. You won't get by with a thing. If your work passes inspection, fine; if it doesn't, your part of the building will be torn out and started over. But you won't be torn out; you'll survive--but just barely. (1 Cor 3:11-15)
As we build the house of Christ - laboring in the gospel and bringing men to Christ, there are basic rules. The principle being that the foundation- Christ has already been laid and we are warned how we are to build upon it.When God appeared to Moses on Mt . Sinai, he gave him instructions on how to build the first 'temple' (the ark of the covenant).The Lord had given Moses an architectural impression which he was to follow to build the ark of the covenant.
And see to it that you copy [exactly] their pattern which was shown you on the mountain. (Exo 25:40)
However, the men to do the work had not been with him to see it.Therefore, the Lord filled some artisans and skillful men with the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, to be able to replicate exactly what Moses had seen on the Mountain. In this way, the Lord ensured that the work Moses was going to produce would not be rejected.
And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, To devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, And in cutting of stones, to set [them], and in carving of timber, to work in all manner of workmanship. (Exo 31:3-5)
As we build upon the foundation, we must pray for this wisdom and understanding to know how we should build.Paul, also prays for the Ephesian Church that God would grant them the spirit of wisdom and revelation to have their eyes open, so as to see the things they would need to build the house of Christ.
These are;
- Knowing what we were called to do,
- the riches of inheritance given to the believers (saints) and
- the power he has availed us his children to perform great exploits.
That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what [is] the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power (Eph 1:17-19)
